Freedom of Thought

This is the basis for all of our other constitutionally guaranteed rights as American citizens. So, why does our federal governemtn draw the line at "illegal" drug use? Because it's dangerous? Automobiles are dangerous. Planes are dangerous. Guns are dangerous. Surgery is dangerous. Life is dangerous, actually, DEATH is dangerous, although unavoidable. Capitalism is dangerous... run out of money, and you're screwed! Alcohol is stupid (in my opinion). The point is, people should have the right to do what they will to their bodies. This includes the consumption of peyote for "religious purposes", and the use of mushrooms (also for "religious purposes"). Heck, even Christ turned water into wine, and that was for fun!

Dear Sour Monkey,
It is surprising to me that you take such a libertarian view with regards to drug abuse. Drug abuse destroys peoples lives. Take for a moment Pot out of the equation, although I think it should be illegal also, but if you simply look at Angel Dust, Ecstasy, Meth, Crack, how can one possibly not recognize the major danger that accompanies the use of these substances. The reason the government has an interest in legislating the morality of such behavior is because the behavior affects society. Have you ever seen a crack addict sell her child into prostitution for money? It happens, and it happens often. Have you ever seen a dope fiend rob to satisfy their habit? It happens all the time. Drugs is one of the leading causes of all crime.
We have as a society a great interest in waging war on drugs.

Blessings,
Luke

Luke,

Honestly, I respect your opinion. If I weren't so skeptical of everything, then I would believe just as you do. I do think drugs are dangerous. I don't believe children should be exposed to them... or alcohol, or even sex. But reality is different. It's much more complex than my "ideals" would prefer.

I've decided to try to look at the problem of the "war on drugs" from a new angle. Maybe the problem isn't drugs, afterall, drugs have ALWAYS been a part of human society. This trend predates law, and I say this only because there are examples of animal "drug" use in the natural environment. Maybe our problem with the "war on drugs" comes from our laws themselves.

Drugs are dangerous because addiction is dangerous. Addiction is a bigger force, it compells us to make and spend money, to eat gluttonously, to lust, and to make friends. When we do these things, we feel good.
Feeling good is the addiction of life, it motivates our survival, and it takes many faces.

The results of addiction are dependent upon the mindset of the "user." But before I get into this, I'm going to end here and create a new post.
